Highway 2 crashes force closures near Airdrie

RCMP say treacherous conditions led to a series of crashes north of Calgary on Wednesday.

Airdrie RCMP along with fire and EMS crews were called to two crashes on Highway 2 at approximately 8 a.m., the first near Yankee Valley Boulevard and the second near Highway 72.

As of 8:30 a.m., northbound lanes of Highway 2 were reduced to one lane near 40th Avenue.

“Highway 2 north of Airdrie is open, but travel is not recommended,” police said in a news release.

Meanwhile, RCMP are warning of trouble near Innisfail.

Officials say “road conditions are poor” north of the community south of Bowden.

“The roads were covered with ice and snow, as a result of which there were many collisions and vehicles went off the road. There are no casualties yet,” the police press release said.

Police advise residents to slow down and drive according to road conditions. They also say drivers should expect delays on highways throughout the area due to the weather.
