April 17 (UPI) — Canadian authorities have announced an arrest in an investigation into the theft of nearly $15 million in gold from Toronto's Pearson International Airport last year.

Peel Regional Police and the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will announce the arrests and details of the crime at a news conference at 8:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday.

A brief statement said the arrests were made as part of Project 24K, a “joint investigation into gold theft” from the main airport serving Canada's most populous city, Toronto.

Peel Police Chief Nishan Durayappa, Detective Sgt. Mike Maviti and ATF Special Agent Eric DeGrey will speak.

The announcement comes a year after the robbery and months of relative silence from authorities on the high-profile case.

On April 17, 2023, gold and other valuables valued at $14.5 million were stolen from Pearson International Airport.

Authorities said the goods were in a “high-value container” stolen from a cargo hold that had been unloaded from the plane.
