DET@MTL: Game Summary | Montreal Canadiens

MONTREAL – The Canadiens ended their season with a 5-4 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night at the Bell Centre.

The game was full of exciting moments, starting with Alex Newhook's first goal of the night midway through the first period. The performance gave the Newfoundlander his 100th career point and a new career scoring mark of 15 for the season. Defenseman Logan Mailo, making his NHL debut, scored his first career point in the game.

After the Wings tied it late in the period, the Habs took a 3-1 lead on goals from Brendan Gallagher and Cole Caufield. Gallagher recorded his seventh multi-point night of the campaign by scoring on Newhook's goal early.

Detroit responded with a pair of goals to tie the score, but defenseman Lane Hutson, making his Bell Center debut, made a shot on net from the blue line after exceptional stick handling and poise, and Juraj Slafkowski gave the Habs one more chance. He led 7:14 in regulation. The goal was Slafkowski's 20th of the season – his 50th – and Hutson had his second NHL point and first assist at the Bell Center.

The Red Wings had other ideas and tied the game in the final seconds of regulation before beating the Habs in that game.

Cayden Prime stopped 36 of the 40 shots he faced on the night. For more stats, check out the NHL Gamecenter recap here.

It was an emotional night at the Bell Center as the Canadiens said goodbye to their fans for the 2023-24 season. The team celebrated the last home game of the year with a fan appreciation night, with various initiatives and many prizes for the participants. The themed night ended with the “Jerseys on Our Backs” ceremony presented by RBC, where a few lucky fans were presented with the jerseys directly by the players on the ice.
