Toronto cycling deaths exceed 2023 – Toronto

According to the City of Toronto, there have been three bicycle-related deaths this year. This already exceeds the year-end totals for 2021, 2022 and 2023.

While there have been significant changes in cycling infrastructure, advocates and longtime enthusiasts say a critical component is missing.

For many people in Toronto, the commute home presents many challenges, including traffic, construction and road surface degradation.

According to the city, between 2018 and 2023, 115 kilometers of new bicycle paths will be installed and 90 kilometers of existing bicycle paths will be renewed.

A spokesperson for the city told Global News it is committed to its Vision Zero road safety plan. The plan aims to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries on Toronto's streets.

Last week, 59-year-old professional cyclist Vlad Zotov was struck and killed while cycling on Bayview Avenue near Don Valley Park. On Monday evening, his cycling friends and colleagues remembered him with a ghost ride and memorial service at the crash site.

“There's a huge toll when people lose their lives or are seriously injured in a car crash,” says lawyer and cycling advocate David Shelnutt.

In a statement to Global News, the city said it was in part saddened by the “latest tragic death of a cyclist on our streets,” adding that Vision Zero and the Cycling Network are working continuously to improve safety for all road users. Plan.

David Walsh hopes the incidents on the city's streets will be dealt with urgently.

“It's something that shouldn't be difficult to avoid losing people's lives, so I think we need to do more and faster.”
