Firearm found on Lake Winnipeg shore prompts RCMP investigation – PortageOnline.com

Police were called immediately after a 12-year-old girl found a firearm in Gimli last weekend.

At 12:35 a.m. on April 13, Gimley RCMP received a report of a firearm located on the shores of Lake Winnipeg near North Lake Street and Vaughan Avenue.

A 12-year-old boy found a sawn-off shotgun while cleaning up trash on the beach near a family's cottage, police said. Officers arrived and confiscated the weapon. All firearms found were treated as loaded and all precautions taken. The firearm was rusted and had to be disassembled at the unit, where officers determined it would not fire.

RCMP are continuing to investigate the origin of the firearm and whether it was related to any criminal activity.
