Environmental Science Leaders Honored with Dennis Mock Student Leadership Awards – Graduate

Environmental Applied Science and Management graduate students Brianna Limkilde and Crystal Henry-Mathieu received program and university-level Dennis Mock Student Leadership Awards for their dedication to environmental protection and community engagement at TSU. The campus community celebrated the outstanding achievements of these student leaders at the Student Experience Awards hosted by the Office of the Vice Provost.

“I am honored to be selected as one of the recipients of the Dennis Mock Student Leadership Award. There are so many students who deserve such an award,” said Limkilde, the program's overall recipient. His leadership as president of the City Water Student Leadership Committee was instrumental in building a sense of community among students from diverse backgrounds. By organizing events and initiatives such as faculty and student seminars, he enabled students to learn from each other and participate in collaborative research projects. Looking ahead, Limkeelde is eager to apply her skills to her future research career, aspiring to work for Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Faculty Award winner Henri-Mathie reflected on his visit to TSU. “During my time at TSU, my main focus was to address the many gaps I encountered in my academic journey,” he said. An advocate for diversity and inclusion, Henri-Mathieu is dedicated to building a supportive community for Black women and youth in STEM across Canada. Her outreach initiative, BLK Women in STEM

“Student leadership can be a driving force for change in many ways,” Henry-Mathieu noted. “I hope to bring more visibility to Black women in STEM fields so that young Black girls who have been told 'they can't' or 'they're not' can see clearly that they can.”

Both recipients' commitment to promoting inclusivity and positive change at TMU exemplifies the spirit of change of Dr. Dennis Mock, who has been a dedicated leader at Toronto Met for 28 years and has played a key role in graduate development as Vice-President, Academic. . At the upcoming Dennis Mock Awards 25th Anniversary Reception, Limkeelde, Henry-Mathieu and other TMU changemakers will have the opportunity to network, learn from past award winners and celebrate the university's legacy of student leadership. As they continue to inspire and empower others, their contributions will surely leave a lasting legacy in the TMU community and beyond.
