Calgary weather forecast for Tuesday, April 16, 2024

As expected, a frontal system brought rain to southern Alberta, then brought heavy, wet snow to the region late Monday and into Tuesday.

The integrated low was located around the Calgary area and with a near-freezing atmospheric temperature profile, the early snow was very dense, with plenty of water around the snowflake nuclei.

The weekend's unusually warm conditions allowed surfaces such as roads to retain enough heat to melt the original snow on the roads as it accumulates on natural surfaces and vehicles.

This system will track east throughout the day Tuesday, with a still warm front leading to showers until a cold air mass behind it drops temperatures.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the wind speed from the north will reach 20-40 kilometers per hour.

Temperatures are also expected to remain slightly below seasonal levels for the rest of the week, with daytime highs between nine and 11 below the average until Friday.

Another strong ridge of high pressure will move in by the end of the weekend, while a polar air mass sinks south over eastern Canada.
