A Winnipeg driver is angry about being ticketed for an extension cord

A Winnipeg driver is furious after being ticketed for plugging his car into an electrical outlet.

Daryl Ellis, who lives on Cedargrove Crescent in Transcona, ran a wire across the sidewalk to plug his car into an outlet Saturday night. On Sunday morning, he found the ticket.

According to city regulations, the wires can pose a tripping hazard.

“The wire goes from the edge of my lawn to the side of my truck. There's no way you're going to see a wire walking down the street unless you're looking for it at all,” Ellis said.

Last year, he parked his car on the lawn to plug it in, but city officials told him it wasn't allowed, so he ran the wire along the sidewalk.

“That's what happened the first night I plugged my car in and I got a ticket. “And when I looked at the ticket, it was issued at 5:10 in the morning,” he said.

Ellis called 311 for more information and was told to go to City Hall and fight the ticket.

Extension cord tickets

Last winter, there were 236 tickets for leaving a wire or cable on or off the street.

The five most ticketed streets:

– College avenue — 8

– Whiteway Road — 7

– Martin Avenue West — 6

– Corner of Craglea – 5

– Shyrsha Street — 5
