Spring cleaning is underway in Winnipeg

Although snow is in the forecast, spring cleaning has officially begun in Winnipeg.

City crews have been out on the streets this week tackling roads, bridges, sidewalks and driveways. The goal is to clean the entire street network of the city within the next six weeks.

This is done using more than 300 pieces of equipment operated by about 500 workers.

“We expect to collect 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes of sand and debris,” said Michael Cantor, manager of the City of Winnipeg's Street Maintenance Department.

Kantor says that it is necessary to pay attention to where street cleaning works are taking place.

“The easiest way to do this is to download the Know Your Area app so you know when we're coming to sweep your street,” Cantor explained.

Residents are also warned not to park on the street while the cleaning is planned, following road signs prohibiting temporary parking.
