Montreal Olympic Stadium: Competition looks for innovative ways to recycle the roof

An international competition hopes to gather new and interesting ways to recycle the roof of Montreal's Olympic Stadium, which will be dismantled this summer.

Anyone with a flair for design and architecture is invited to submit their “creative and innovative solutions” to give new life to the many materials that make up the pavement.

“The roof consists of various materials, including the emblematic cables that support it, its two internal and external membranes, and the fittings that support the structure,” noted representatives of the Olympic Park (SDMVPO).

It is a global competition “to gather the most ecologically, economically and socially optimal proposals”.

After all applications have been received, Quebecers will be invited to vote for their favorites among the eight finalists pre-selected by a panel of expert judges.

“This initiative is part of a broader approach to sustainable development and circular economy,” SDMVPO officials noted. “These actions will give the roof of the Olympic Stadium a second life for the benefit of the people of Quebec.”

The SDMVPO explains that the outer and inner roof membranes have a volume of 42,000 m2, roughly the size of 26 hockey fields.

The total length of the cables is about 12 km, almost the entire length of Boulevard Saint-Laurent, and the roof consists of 434 steel connectors that attach the cables.

Demolition of the roof of the Olympic stadium is planned for the summer of 2024.
