A man who stabbed a Toronto police officer to death has been charged with attempted murder

Toronto police say a 27-year-old man who was shot dead last week after allegedly stabbing a police officer in the city has been charged with multiple offences, including two counts of attempted murder.

An Ontario police watchdog said officers, who are also investigating, responded to a call about a person in crisis on Friday.

A Toronto police officer was stabbed and a suspect was shot after an altercation outside a Tim Hortons in the area of ​​College Street and Lansdowne Avenue, a spokesman for the Special Investigations Unit said.

Toronto police said Friday that both the officer and the suspect were in stable condition in hospital.

The 27-year-old man is charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault on a peace officer, assault with a weapon on two peace officers and four counts of failure to comply with a release order, police said.

The SIU investigates cases involving the serious injury or death of a police officer.
