Canada's Lane Hutson scores first point in NHL debut – Hockey Writers – Montreal Canadiens

There was a lot of hype surrounding Monday night's matchup between the Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings. On Detroit's side, it had to do with their push for the Stanley Cup playoffs. For Montreal, it was the debut of 2022 second-round draft pick and defenseman Lane Hutson. And that's when the young gun got his first NHL point in the second shift with a goal on Brendan Gallagher's goal.

He announced his presence in the first round on Monday. A quick slide to the right side of the rink in the offensive zone allowed him to feed the puck into the crease, where after some bounce, Gallagher put the cookie home. The goal opened the scoring and put the pressure on the Red Wings, who desperately needed two points. Time will tell how good Hutson can be at the professional level, but it was a sensational way to debut, especially for a struggling franchise.

It's moments like these that keep fans engaged in late-season contests, despite their beloved club being eliminated from postseason contention. It's a great time of year for sides like the Canadians to start preparing for their future. Enter Hutson, who is coming off a fantastic season playing for Boston University in the NCAA (15 goals and 34 assists in 38 games) and won a gold medal with Team USA at the last World Juniors.
