The Calgary Flames have signed goaltender Waltery Ignatev to a one-year, two-way contract

The Calgary Flames have added depth at the prospect from an unlikely source.

The team announced Monday that they signed goaltender Waltery Ignatev to a one-year, two-way contract with AAV for $870,000.

The agreement is for the 2024-25 season.

It's safe to say that Ignatev was on the radar for any pundit to sign. The 24-year-old is undrafted and his maximum professional hockey experience was five games in his native Finland's Jukurit Liiga during the 2021-22 season.

However, Ignatev has had success in the last two seasons. Last season with the Mestis' Kiekko-Espoo, the Helsinki native went 21-2-5, posted a league-best goals-against average (1.74) and save percentage (.927) and led Espoo to the team's first league championship.

In 2023-24, Ignatev signed a contract with Mora IK of Hockey Allsvenkan. He went 26-18-0 with a 2.34 GAA and a .918 SV% as the league's top goaltender. Ignatev helped Mora reach the semi-finals of the play-offs before being eliminated by Djurgårdens IF.

The fact that a goaltender hasn't played in a top division pro league overseas and signed an NHL contract may be painful for some. However, thanks to his latest work, Ignatev got the opportunity to play in North America.

As a result of the signing, the Flames have signed 32 standard player contracts for next season, including three goalkeepers. Oskar Dansk (UFA) and Dustin Wolff (RFA) are currently out of contract for the 2024-25 season.

According to CapFriendly , Calgary is projected to receive nearly $18.7 million in cap space next season.
