Winnipeg police have arrested a suspect for second-degree murder

A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with two fatal shootings after Winnipeg police called for help locating him earlier this month.

Officers say 27-year-old Maxime Dale Garneau was arrested Thursday. He was carrying a loaded gun hidden in his bag, police said.

He was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, as well as a number of weapons offenses.

He was safely arrested, and the weapon and its ammunition were confiscated.

The charges stem from two separate shootings in Winnipeg several months ago.

The first was on September 10, 2023. Police were called to the 200 block of College Avenue for a report of a man shot.

They found him outside the apartment building with a gunshot wound.

He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died.

Police identified him as Daniel Raymond Harvey-Rodriguez, 25, of Winnipeg.

The next incident happened March 18, when police were called to a home in the 1200 block of Selkirk Avenue, this time for a report of a man who had been shot.

He has been identified as 56-year-old Edgar Allan Bear. He was a member of the Peguis First Nation and lived in Winnipeg.

Police later identified Garneau as a suspect in both murders. After consultation with the Manitoba Prosecutor's Office, two charges of second-degree murder were laid.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.
