The roof of the Olympic Stadium was originally designed to be a tensile Kevlar material. The first roof was installed ten years after the stadium was used for the Olympics and was replaced in 1998 with a non-removable version, which also malfunctioned. The stadium was closed during the winter due to the threat of snow, and remained closed this spring, forcing groups such as CF Montréal to abandon plans to use it.

The construction of the new roof will take four years.
