Man rescued from Toronto apartment window fire, later arrested for assault: officials

A man had to be rescued after a fire broke out of a third-floor apartment window in downtown Toronto, officials said, but they later took a break to attack.

Emergency crews were called to a low-rise building on George Street near Jarvis Street and East Dundas Street at 8:25 a.m. Sunday to a report of a fire.

A spokesperson for the Toronto Fire Department told CityNews that crews found the resident hanging from the unit's window.

According to the press secretary, the man was rescued with the help of a ladder in a fire truck.

According to the Toronto Police Service, the man assaulted an officer at the scene of the fire and was later arrested. The circumstances of the incident were not disclosed.

Emergency workers took the resident to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

In addition, a representative of the Toronto Fire Service said that the fire did not extend beyond the territory of the department. It is not known how the fire started.
