The Sea Bears are renovating downtown Winnipeg's basketball courts

The Winnipeg Sea Bears made an effort to rehabilitate two basketball courts downtown.

The CEBL team has partnered with Buckets and Borders and Payworks Mayfair project removing social barriers and encouraging community youth to participate in sports.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to bring so many kids to the game of basketball and provide a safe space for them to learn, grow and play.” Jason SmithPresident of the Winnipeg Sea Bears.

“We look forward to bringing the Sea Bears to Mayfair and St John's courts this summer and connecting with young people in these wonderful community spaces.”

The court at the corner of River Avenue and Donald Street will be upgraded with new backboards, standards and borders. A second, brand new court will be added next door to expand access to basketball in the area. A local Winnipeg artist will eventually create a full court painting to complete the downtown space.

The trial is scheduled to end on Friday, July 5. The organizations will hold a grand opening on Sunday, July 7 to celebrate with the community.

The Sea Bears made headlines earlier this week when the league announced the city would host Winnipeg's 2025 championship weekend.
