The Grad Town shopping experience helps graduates look their best for prom

Graduation is an exciting time in a young person's life and is the culmination of many years of hard work.

However, not everyone can buy new clothes to make them feel and look their best at prom.

This is where Trellis Society's Grad Town comes in to help.

On Saturday at Trellis Renfrew, located at 731 13 Ave NE, graduates were invited to explore a wide selection of beautiful apparel including dresses, suits, skirts, jackets, blouses, ties, pants, t-shirts, purses, sunglasses, heels, sneakers. and so on.

“Obviously everything is very expensive, as is the cost of living. A dress costs hundreds of dollars, and that's a lot of money that most of us don't have these days,” says Cady Hughes, a Trellis Society volunteer.

“Any children in the community who have access to formal wear, such as suits or dresses, can come to our event and choose it for free. Then they have something great, they feel confident and excited to wear to graduation.”

Clothing is provided free of charge or by donation.

“It removes that barrier so families can enjoy graduation season and have fun finding clothes,” says Hughes.

Keegan Duke, a senior at Forest Lawn High School, was one of about 40 youths who stopped by Saturday, and he agrees.

“Not everyone can easily afford clothes,” Duke said.

“I go to Forest Lawn High School, so certain areas are known to be more at the bottom of the grades, and a lot of my friends would really appreciate that opportunity.”

Dueck also appreciates the thought of making sure the event is relevant to everyone.

“There's a lot here where you can meet new people. Whether you prefer colors that match your style, what you like, and masculine, androgynous, or feminine clothing, there's something for everyone.

In addition to clothing; Del Mar College was there to offer some hair tips and Mac Cosmetics was there to help with makeup.

If someone donates after finding their clothes; Every dollar raised goes back to the Trellis Society to support other teens, babies, families and friends in need in the community.

Its services range from housing, family and child development to clinical, employment and cultural support.
