Tkachuk had 2 goals, Batterson scored on a shootout, and the Senators beat Canada 5-4.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Brady Tkachuk had two goals and an assist, Drake Batterson scored the lone goal in a shootout, and the Ottawa Senators beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 on Saturday night.

Shane Pinto and Thomas Chabot also scored for Ottawa, which extended its winning streak against Montreal to nine games with a 3-0 win over the Canadiens.

Joonas Korpisalo made 21 saves for Ottawa.

Cole Caufield scored twice for Montreal, while Mike Matheson and Alex Newhook also scored. Cayden Prime stopped 40 shots.

Tkachuk tied a career high with 37 goals, but he didn't want to celebrate as the Senators were long out of playoff contention.

“I mean, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't mean much,” Tkachuk said. “As I said this morning, this year has been more about team goals than individual goals, and unfortunately we didn't reach them and I think there are a lot of lessons to be learned this year.”

It was bittersweet for Senators interim coach Jacques Martin, who coached his last game at the Canadian Tire Centre, as he won't be behind the bench in Ottawa next season.

“It was great,” Martin said. “I enjoyed the opportunity to come back and hopefully help the team learn what it takes to be in the playoffs, how to play nightly, help the players grow and maybe get better.

“As an organization, I think we have some work to do, but I think we're headed in the right direction.”

With the game tied 3-3, Newhook headed home a deflection off Ottawa's Jacob Chychrun to give Montreal a 4-3 lead with 4:11 left. Chabot with Korpisalo tied the game at 4 with 1:05 left.

“The fact that we've been in so many (close games) this year, that's something you can't buy,” Canadiens coach Martin Saint said. “They are real representatives. Sometimes you defend the lead, you try to pull back, you try to get back into the game. Obviously, overtime and clouds, they are what they are, but I think as we continue to progress, we'll be on the other side of them.”

Tkachuk scored his second goal of the game 47 seconds into the third period to tie the game at 3-3.

Montreal took a 2-1 lead 1:37 into the second period when Caufield slipped the puck under Korpisalo.

Ottawa cut the lead to one with a power play goal at 8:36. Claude Giroud passed the ball back to Pinto who kicked the ball. Caufield responded with a power play goal to put the Canadians up 3-2.

Montreal opened the scoring when Matheson went in alone in the first period and beat Korpisalo with the stick.

Tkachuk tied the game at 1 with a power-play goal at 13:08 when he got his own rebound and deflected a shot past Primeau.

Ottawa center Tim Stützl missed his fifth straight game with an upper-body injury.
