Jason Spezza Announces Retirement | CTV News

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Jason Spezza announced his retirement Sunday after 19 seasons in the NHL.

The Leafs added to the news that Spezza will join their front office as a special assistant to general manager Kyle Dubas, effective immediately.

“I love hockey. Since I was three years old, I have been fortunate enough to pursue my dream and do what I love for many years,” Spezza said in a press release.

The two-time NHL All-Star said there are too many people to thank personally, but he said he is “forever grateful and indebted” to the Ottawa Senators, Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs and Hockey Canada. His time in the NHL was split between three teams.

“Hockey has been my life's work and it's great to come home to Toronto and end my playing career where it started,” Spezza said.

“I will never be able to repeat the feeling of stepping on the ice to the crowd, but it is something I will always remember. Thank you.”

The 38-year-old said he is looking forward to transitioning into his new role as a member of the Leafs front office. Meanwhile, Dubas reiterated that expectation.

“It's hard to describe how long and positive Jason Spezza's impact has been over his past three seasons with the Maple Leafs,” Dubas said in a statement.

“Jason's passion for the game of hockey, his constant drive to improve himself and his teammates, and his ability to build strong relationships with all members of the organization have been invaluable.”

During his career, Spezza scored 995 points in 1,248 regular season NHL games. Spezza ranks in the top 100 on the NHL's all-time list in games played, assists and points.
