A fire has engulfed a northwest Calgary restaurant

Dozens of firefighters and dozens of engines took to the streets Monday night as a restaurant roof caught fire in Kensington, Calgary.

Shortly after 10pm on Monday night, smoke and flames could be seen billowing and pouring from the roofs of some restaurants on Kensington Road and 10th Street Northeast as a sea of yellow fire truck hose lined the street.

Online footage showed firefighters having to use chainsaws to tear apart part of the roof after the two-alarm blaze was brought under control.

No one was injured in the fire, and investigators are still trying to figure out what happened and how it started.

Last week, the same area was approved for a 16-story tower, and the council unanimously approved the rezoning of the land.

It didn't happen without some pushback from people living in the neighborhood — people voiced their concerns at City Hall recently, and there were plenty — mostly about how the 16-story building doesn't fit the overall feel of the area.

A proposal to build a residential tower on the site has been pushed back over the years.

In 2015, the family that owns one of the restaurants insisted on building a tower, and the council voted against it.

Two years later, a lawsuit was filed against former city councilman Druh Farrell, leading to a very long and contentious legal battle.

Now there is a lot of uncertainty about what will happen in this area.

The Calgary Fire Department is asking anyone with photos, video or information about the fire, especially before firefighters arrive, to email [email protected].
