Local umpire selected to work Telus Cup Regional in Winnipeg – PembinaValleyOnline.com

Jayden Wiebe, director of officiating for the Pembina Valley Minor Hockey Association, joined the morning show to talk about his experience on the ice at the Telus Cup regionals in Winnipeg.

This year, the Winnipeg Wild hosted the event, where the winner of the tournament will compete in the 2024 TELUS Cup under-18 club championship. Wiebe talked about how he got involved.

“Twelve officials, 12 referees and 12 linesmen are selected. They are selected and you go through two to three months of observation to get down to the six-man list. So I was lucky to be selected.”

Wiebe, who has worked many U18 games at Morden, commented on the differences he saw in the two games he managed.

“They were both very simple, very simple games. The kids are all trying to win a championship. So there's not a lot of exciting business. They're working hard and it's just fast-paced hockey. It's a lot of fun.”

Besides, there is always a demand for more officials in PVMHA. Wiebe commented on the search for additional references.

“It's something that gets harder every year and it's getting harder. That's why we try to get officials in the offseason and early in the season. It doesn't matter how old you are as long as you're willing to come. Come out and give everybody a hand and we can keep hockey going.”
