A Michigan man and his dog were rescued from an icy inland lake

MICHIGAMME TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) – A Michigan man and his dog have been rescued from the icy waters of an inland lake in the state's Upper Peninsula, authorities said. Three first responders required medical attention.

Ted Cooper, 56, of Michigamme Township was looking for his dog Friday afternoon when he found its head stuck on the ice about 100 yards (meters) from the shore of Lake Michigamme, the Marquette County Sheriff's Office said.

Cooper went into the lake in a boat to rescue the dog, but fell in and was unable to get out, the office said.

The sheriff's dive team reached Cooper with a flotation board and brought him to shore. The dog was later rescued, the office said. Cooper and his dog spent about an hour and a half in the water.

Two first responders were taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia, while another responder sought treatment for cuts after falling through the ice, the office said.
