1 dead after bus crashes at cruise ship terminal in Honolulu

HONOLULU (AP) – One person was killed and several others injured Friday when a shuttle bus crashed into pedestrians and concrete barriers at the Honolulu cruise ship terminal, authorities said.

Honolulu police said the crash occurred when the bus driver mistakenly pressed the gas pedal for the brake.

According to the police, when the driver was dropping off customers at 2-Perst, people noticed that the bus was moving forward. When the driver stepped on the accelerator, he jumped into the driver's seat and attempted to stop the vehicle, police said.

One pedestrian, a 68-year-old woman, died. Emergency workers took four more people aged 50-60 to the hospital in serious condition. They also took a man in his 70s to the hospital in stable condition.

Paramedics evaluated and bandaged six other people who refused to be taken to a hospital, Honolulu EMS spokesman Shane Enright said.

Police said speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash. It's unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved, police said.
