Canada advises travel to Israel, West Bank due to increased risk

OTTAWA – Canadians have been told to avoid traveling to Israel and the West Bank due to the “unpredictable security situation” in the region.

Global Affairs Canada says the threat of an attack on Israeli territory has increased, and tensions and violence are high in the West Bank.

A Palestinian man was killed and 25 others were injured after dozens of angry Israeli settlers stormed an Israeli-occupied West Bank village, shooting and burning homes and cars, Palestinian health officials said today.

Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie says the regional security situation remains extremely volatile and could escalate without warning.

He said Canadians should consider leaving the region commercially.

The updated travel guide comes less than two weeks after seven World Food Center aid workers, including a Canadian-American duo, were killed when an Israeli airstrike hit their food convoy in the Gaza Strip.
