Calgary police officer shot in Falconridge Plaza incident

A police officer and a suspect were shot Wednesday afternoon while executing a high-risk search warrant in a northeast Calgary parking lot.

The officer was taken to hospital in stable condition.

The suspect died.

Another suspect was lightly injured in a scuffle with the police and is currently in custody.

Police said officers were attempting to make an arrest in the 5700 block of Falsbridge Drive NE at 1 p.m. when “shots were fired,” resulting in the officer and one suspect being shot.

“The suspects have a history of other crimes involving firearms,” Calgary Police Service Acting Deputy Chief Cliff O'Brien said at an afternoon news conference.

O'Brien would not elaborate on the operation because the investigation is ongoing.

He said multiple officers were present, including members of the tactical team, and that the officer who was shot was an 11-year member of CPS.

He did not name the officer, but provided an update that the officer was later released from the hospital.

Police officers “deal with dangerous situations all the time,” O'Brien said.

“It's part of being a police officer.”

He called it an “emotional” day – and it's “never easy”.

“No police officer starts their shift expecting something like this to happen,” he said.

“No one starts their shift expecting a member of the public to be dead at the end of the interaction.

“Nobody goes into a shift expecting to get hurt or get shot.”

The province's police watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), is currently investigating.
