City asks to rename Central Park – Winnipeg Free Press

The city administration will consider the request to change the name of the Central Park in the spirit of agreement.

An application to the city says the inner-city park is a regular gathering place for local Winnipeggers and newcomers, and renaming it will recognize the former and teach the latter a new home.

“The name Central Park is a geographical description that will not offend anyone. However, the act of restitution through name change is a powerful act of decolonization that recognizes the commitment of the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission to calls for action,” the inquiry document said.

The city administration will consider the request to change the name of the Central Park.

Civil society organizations and members have submitted applications, but are not named in the document.

130 people signed the petition to support the changes.

The request was received through the Welcoming Winnipeg policy, which provides the city's Department of Indigenous Affairs with a process to create new historic markers or change their current names.

The request does not include suggestions for a new name.
