A flight from Toronto was forced to cancel due to a nearby landing

A flight from Toronto Pearson International Airport was forced to abort after another plane diverted to land on a nearby runway.

The incident happened on March 22 at around 23.00 local time.

According to the Transport Safety Board (TSB), another flight operated by LOT Polish Airlines was in the middle of landing while the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight was preparing to take off.

It descended and began moving to a different runway than planned. This alternative runway is located near the end of the runway where the KLM flight is authorized to operate.

The flight was ordered to be aborted. According to the TSB, the plane was traveling at about 110 knots at the time, which is 200 km/h.

The minimum distance between the two aircraft was approximately 5,400 feet. There are no casualties.

The incident was labeled a 'Class 5', which the TSB defines as a minor incident that does not require an in-depth investigation. New safety lessons are likely to be identified, the TSB says, but the incident will attract “limited public interest outside the immediate area”.
