After his sophomore NCAA season, Lane Hutson signed with the Montreal Canadiens.

The contract was first reported by Elliott Friedman and confirmed by several others. The contract has not yet been officially announced.

Hutson and Boston University entered the NCAA's Frozen Four as one of the top college teams in the United States after losing to Denver in overtime in the semifinals on Thursday.

The defenseman finished his season with 15 goals and 34 assists in 37 games, one more than his freshman season a year ago. He's the second-highest point guard on his team behind projected first overall pick Maclin Celebrini in the upcoming NHL Draft. Hutson also won a gold medal with Team USA at the World Juniors this year, finishing the event with the most assists by a blueliner and being named to the tournament's all-star team.

The deal, which is expected to “burn” a year of his contract by playing NHL games with the Canadiens to finish this season, will go through the 2025-26 campaign. He will be one of many defensemen currently in the mix to make the Habs roster in the fall.
