The annual Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad campaign kicked off Friday with its launch a six-week prostate cancer awareness and education campaign.

“Today we start the countdown to the day of the trip and the 16thth Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dads Fighting Prostate Cancer (MRFD),” said Mo Sabourin, MRFD Co-Chair. “Over the next six weeks, our organizing committee and media partners are focused on educating Manitobans about prostate cancer and the importance of early detection. Riders and pledge donors can join the fight by registering online at ridefordad.ca/manitoba.

The event was hosted by Trans Canada Brewing Co. organized, which supports a motorcycle ride for dad with proceeds from the sale of MRFD's official beer. Straight Pipe Blond Ale.

MRFD also raises funds with a raffle where two motorcycles or $20,000 in cash can be won. Tickets are available at Harley Davidson Winnipeg, Headingley Sport Shop, Windsor Plywood, Trans Canada Brewing and Winnipeg Police Credit Union.

This year's attraction is scheduled for May 25 and is supported BMW Motorrad and Winnipeg Police Credit Union. Sun Starts at Earls Polo Park and will continue west of Portage Avenue to Assiniboine Downs with a police escort, then Selkirk, Gimli and back to the event at Cowboys, Canada Inns Windsor Park.

Over 1.2 million men in Canada have prostate cancer and 80% of them don't know it.

Ed Johner, a prostate cancer survivor and advocate for Dad's Motorcycle Rides in Manitoba, says a simple three-minute test could save your life.

“If I had avoided the challenge, I wouldn't be here today,” Johner said. “Our message to these men and their families is that the best way to fight prostate cancer is early diagnosis.”

The MFRD organizing committee is chaired by Mo Sabourin and Kirk Van Alstyne. Celebrity Ride Captains Adam Bighill, Winnipeg Blue Bombers; Bob Dice, head coach of the Ottawa Redblacks; Poncho Parker, host, 92 CITI FM; and the Ferguson sisters – Ciel, Thea, Ani and Kathryn – are Manitoba motocross champions.

Proceeds from the 2023 MRFD – $605,000 – were donated to the Prostate Cancer Genome Research Center and the Manitoba Prostate Cancer Support Group, representing Manitoba prostate cancer researchers. Over the past 15 years, the Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad has raised more than $4.2 million to fight prostate cancer. Proceeds stay for prostate cancer research and education in Manitoba.
