Second woman charged in serial attack south of Pembina Freeway – Winnipeg Free Press

A second woman has been charged in connection with “multiple” burglaries south of Pembina Highway.

More than $15,000 in property was stolen during the burglaries between October and February. Winnipeg Police previously announced that a 23-year-old woman was arrested on Feb. 15 at a home on Newdale Avenue and charged with 69 counts of breaking and entering and theft.

The apartment complex on Dalhousie Drive, which has more than 100 mailboxes, was broken into more than a dozen times between October and January. Mail containing credit cards and checks were stolen and used to make purchases. The total cost of the renovations was about $80,000, WPS said in late February.

Garages and cars were broken into, and thieves took tools, clothes and cash. Eight of the vehicles were confiscated.

Police continued their investigation and, with the help of tips from public and security videos, identified another suspect in connection with the theft and additional crimes.

One of the other break-ins involved a car parked outside a restaurant in the 2500 block of Pembina Highway on Feb. 16, the day after the first suspect was arrested. They broke the window of the car and stole a laptop and money.

Police obtained a search warrant for the second suspect's home in the Fort Richmond area and his home Tuesday. Officers seized two laptops – one stolen on February 16 and another stolen in March 2019 – hundreds of “stolen identification documents and financial securities” and an air rifle.

A 38-year-old woman was charged with 16 counts of theft and theft. A 40-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. Both were placed in a detention center.

Police are continuing to investigate with the assistance of the WPS Financial Crimes Unit.

WPS also encourages the public to record the serial numbers of personal items such as vehicles/trailers, recreational sports equipment, power tools and bicycles.

“Filing a police report with such serial numbers may increase the chances of returning this property to its rightful owner if it is recovered,” the press release said.
