Don't expect much from the Bombers – Winnipeg Free Press

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers won't be able to produce any fireworks after CFL free agency begins Tuesday morning.

Much of the excitement has already happened, including a couple of days last week that led to new deals for All-Stars Brady Oliveira, Dalton Schoen and Brandon Alexander.

Of the Bombers' 35 pending free agents this offseason, one was a new special teams coordinator (Mike Miller), another retired (Jackson Jeffcoat), and 17 were re-signed through 2024.

While there has been plenty of good news to report over the past few months, the Bombers have seen a number of key producers move elsewhere in their quest to re-sign as many players as possible. Offensive lineman Jermarcus Hardrick (Saskatchewan), linebacker Demerio Houston (Calgary) and linebacker Ricky Walker (Calgary) have all signed new deals with CFL headquarters, signings during the league's recent negotiating window, which will be officially confirmed. the market officially opens at 11 am

The Blue and Gold spent a significant portion of their $5.58 million salary, leaving little and still nowhere near enough to land the big fish. Maybe an addition or two, but none expected to steal the headlines or break the bank.

Indeed, the Bombers look pretty good coasting through the free agent waters. So let's take a look at where they stand on offense, defense and special teams, and what holes there might be or changes to come.

Offense

The Bombers have the CFL's best quarterback in Zach Collaros under contract through 2025, and they also added the league's most exciting backup in Chris Streveler. With Streveler now on board to handle the shortstop duties, the club will say goodbye to Dakota Prukop, leaving the third QB spot open for the Bombers to develop another arm like the now-departed Drew Brown. Since signing with the Ottawa Redblacks.

Winnipeg made offensive line a priority to start the winter, signing right guard Patrick Neufeld and left tackle Stanley Bryant before re-signing center Chris Kolankowski. The Bombers plan to move on from left guard Jeff Gray, a native of Winnipeg, to increase the role of Tui Ely and Liam Dobson. Hardrick will be hard to fill at right tackle, and while the Bombers aren't sure where he'll find his spot, it could come from anywhere. A pick from home, including someone like Chris Ivey, could unearth a gem as a US tryout camp through free agency or the club's scouting staff.

Oliveira's re-signing strengthens the No. 2 spot, while Canada's Johnny Augustin also returns as No. 2 for another year. Expect Streveler and receiver Nick Demski to make an impact in the running game as well.

With Schoen's last-minute signing, the Bombers will once again have one of the league's best receiving corps, featuring Kenny Lawler, Demski and Drew Wolitarsky. The future of fan-favorite wide receiver Rasheed Bailey is unclear as he has yet to commit, but unless he's willing to take another significant pay cut this year, there's a good chance he'll play. elsewhere.
