Local rescue in need of a home, kitten food

A local kitten adoption agency is calling on the public to help deal with the seasonal influx of furry residents.

Winnipeg Kitten Adoption currently cares for 65 kittens under the age of six weeks. This is equal to 11 lents and their mothers.

The increase is unusual for this time of year and may be due to an unseasonably warm winter, according to Assistant Principal Jennifer Kasprick.

“I'm wondering if we're going to have two kitten seasons this year because we don't usually have an influx of kittens until late June.”

The nonprofit rescue now distributes about 200 cans of wet food a day, as well as dry food.

She survives through fundraising and donations, but needs help to feed and house her hungry litter. Most of the kittens currently in foster care are looking for permanent homes.

Adoption of a kitten requires a $160 fee, which includes its first two vaccinations, identification tattoo, spay and neuter, deworming and vet check. They usually recover at eight weeks of age.

If people can't afford it, they can donate through the rescue's website.

“We passed over $4,200 in emergency checks over the weekend, so we have a lot going on now.”
