A chemical spill from the concert venue spilled into Etobicoke Creek

A chemical spill from a pool at Rockpile, a music venue in Etobicoke, spilled into the river and spread to three locations.

The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks says the leak happened on Tuesday, April 9, and staff were monitoring the area and Toronto Water.

Few details have been released about the spill, but Toronto Water has determined it originated from a reservoir at the concert and event venue located at 5555 West Dundas Street.

“…The source of this material is still unknown and may be the result of illegal dumping,” said a statement sent to CTV News Toronto.

The City of Toronto confirmed the unknown material was “petroleum-like”.

The cleanup by the city, Toronto Water and contractors began Tuesday and continues Thursday. The pool has been cleared, although crews continue to clean up three affected areas downstream.

“The contractor was arrested and started to remove the flowing material from the river. The leaked material has a diesel smell and will be confirmed by laboratory analysis of the samples collected by the ministry,” the report said.
