Manitoba News: Wab Kinew says legislative prayer may change

WINNIPEG –

The Manitoba government is trying to change the daily prayer in the legislature to give more exposure to the province's residents.

Prime Minister Wab Kinew says brief comments at the start of the daily process could be a way to ensure that people of different faiths, atheists and those who believe in secularism are taken into account.

The opening prayer refers to an eternal and almighty God, and states that members of the legislature pray only to desire things according to God's will.

Kinew says he will seek input on any changes and hasn't decided what the new wording might be.

This step is welcomed by a group that fought for religious neutrality in government circles.

Humanist Canada says there are alternatives to prayer, such as a moment of silence or meditation.
