'Avoid water bodies': Rain expected in Toronto – Toronto

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Toronto, where some areas could see up to 50 millimeters of rain Friday morning.

The Met Office said the rain was “overwhelming the area” on Thursday and would continue overnight.

There is also a chance of thunderstorms Thursday afternoon, Environment Canada said.

Rainfall totals are expected to range from 20 to 45 mm, with thunderstorms likely to be as high as 50 mm.

“Heavy showers may cause flash flooding and water logging on roads. Localized floods may occur in low-lying mountainous areas,” forecasters said.

The Toronto Region Conservation Authority said it previously issued a water safety statement in a post on X, also known as Twitter.

“Water levels in rivers are likely to be higher than normal and banks are likely to be slippery,” it said on Thursday.

“Stay away from bodies of water and mountainous areas.”

Environment Canada says the rain is expected to taper off by Friday morning.

Environment Canada said wind gusts of up to 80 km/h were expected Friday afternoon and overnight.
