Rat or muskrat? Calgarians are sparking a debate about running rodents

A post on the Ask Calgary Facebook group of a rodent roaming the city has sparked debate over whether the animal is a muskrat or the dreaded rat.

Facebook user Jasmine Newstater's post to the group asked Calgarians to guess what they thought the rodent was, and her husband said she was “sure” it was a rat.

“It was very fast and hard to photograph clearly, but I'd say it was the size of a pint of oil…just round,” added the creature, who spotted it near Calgary International Airport.

The post garnered hundreds of comments, with most respondents likely to be muskrats.

Some people have even pointed to the fact that Alberta proudly claims to be a rat-free province as a reason why it is rat-free.

“It can't be a rat…how can they get past the invisible rat shield that Alberta has clearly spent tax dollars on?” The government said we were rat free…soooo…yeah. Jk I think it's a muskrat too,” added one user, while another added: “I work at an airport and we have a lot of little ones running around like that! Protecting the Muskrat”.
