Winnipeg police officer not charged in hit-and-run, arrests injured man

Manitoba's police watchdog — the Manitoba Independent Investigations Unit (IIU) — says an officer involved in a car crash that left a man injured will not face charges.

The IIU was informed on June 7, 2023 by the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) that a man was injured during a vehicle collision and arrest.

The WPS report said around 4 a.m., officers spotted the stolen truck driving near Inkster Boulevard and St. Cross Street before going through the intersection at a high rate of speed and striking a police vehicle.

The driver attempted to flee, and one officer briefly used force, and a taser was used.

After that, the driver was arrested. Officers who arrived at the station of the 3rd district noticed the man's visible injuries and called an ambulance.

Through its investigation, the IIU determined that the officers' use of force was justified and decided that no charges would be filed.

The man, who was charged and arrested in connection with the incident, remains in court.
