Long-term construction begins today in Gardiner to the west

Long term construction It is expected to begin on the west side of Toronto's Gardiner Expressway Thursday night.

Beginning at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 (weather permitting), one westbound lane on Gardiner between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue will be closed for major construction. One eastbound lane will remain closed.

East of Lake Shore Boulevard east of Jason Avenue is also closed to facilitate traffic consolidation and congestion management near the work zone. Construction will see intermittent closures of the second eastbound or westbound lane at night.

These lane closures will remain in place until mid-2027 and will reopen briefly from May to the end of July 2026 for the FIFA World Cup.

The city says diversions, traffic agents, signal timing adjustments and other technologies will be used to improve congestion around construction zones.

Between 2014 and 2016, Toronto City Council approved the Gardiner Expressway Strategic Rehabilitation Plan, which divides the work into six sections.
