Man suffers 'severe burns' in Calgary apartment fire – Calgary

A Calgary Fire Department man was taken to hospital with “severe burn injuries” after a fire broke out at an apartment building in the Coventry Hills community Wednesday night.

In a release, CFD said firefighters were called to a four-story residence in the 100 block of Northeast Country Village Park at 11:15 p.m.

Crews saw smoke coming from a second floor window.

“Firefighters encountered heavy smoke in the exit section and working fire extinguishers,” the fire service said. “Firefighters searched the apartment and found one resident in a bedroom.”

Although the injured man was the only person in the apartment, more than 60 apartments in the complex were evacuated.

“The apartment sustained significant smoke and water damage,” CFD said. “The apartment below had water damage and adjacent apartments had some smoke damage.”

People who were forced to leave the undamaged apartments Wednesday night have since been allowed to return, according to the fire department.

CFD said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
