Manitoba RCMP warned the public Wednesday that online wire transfer scams are on the rise.

According to the police, IIn these cases, the victim receives an email from someone who wants to send them an Interac electronic transfer.

“At first glance, this appears to be legitimate, and when the victim clicks on the link and enters their bank credentials, fraudsters can steal their bank login information,” the RCMP said in a statement. “This allows fraudsters to gain access to an account that allows them to withdraw large sums of money.

“Fraudsters are becoming more and more sophisticated, so extra caution is needed before accepting an electronic transfer.”

The RCMP offered these tips on what to watch out for:

– If you don't expect money, click on the links and try depositing

– Check the e-mail carefully, even though it may have a personal address, it does not mean it is legitimate

– Use Interac e-Transfer auto deposit. If you have Autodeposit set up, Interac e-Transfer transactions sent to your email address will automatically be deposited into your bank account, Autodeposit is a secure way to receive Interac e-Transfer.

– Create strong passwords

– Be aware of what you share online, including personal information that hackers can use to access your accounts

Police said they would contact the local police if they were scammed.
