Toronto baby hospitalized with measles

A baby infected with measles was hospitalized in Toronto.

Toronto Public Health confirmed in a press release Friday that it is investigating a confirmed case of measles linked to the trip.

Few details about the case have been released, but officials say the baby is being treated at a hospital.

Earlier this week, another child who recently traveled abroad was confirmed to have measles. Both TPH and Peel Public Health said they were contacting known contacts of the two children.

Measles is highly contagious and symptoms include a red rash, fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and fatigue.

Viral infection spreads through air and close contact. Symptoms begin to appear seven to 21 days after exposure.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, as of February 3, there were three active cases of measles in the country.

In 2023, there were 12 confirmed cases of measles in Canada.

TPH is warning that school-aged children's vaccination coverage has declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is urging parents to ensure their children are up-to-date.

According to officials, vaccination is very effective in preventing the spread of measles.
