Canada Day celebrations will be held at Nathan Phillips

Canada Day celebrations will be held at Nathan Phillips Square.

A day after saying there would be no July 1 festivities at the downtown square, the city confirmed Wednesday that it would reverse the decision following a meeting between Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvey and city staff.

“On July 1, dozens of Canada Day celebrations will take place across the city, including at Nathan Phillips Square and Mel Lastman Square,” Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvey said in a statement.

“I want to thank the city manager for acting quickly to celebrate Canada Day and continue to encourage people to come together and enjoy Toronto.”

Although Toronto hasn't celebrated Canada Day at Nathan Phillips Square since 2017, the city has already started preparing for the potential event this year, recruiting volunteers and holding information sessions.

However, due to insufficient resources, the city said Tuesday it decided not to move forward with the plan.

“Officials have reconsidered their decision and agreed to continue the Canada Day celebration on the square, as well as the Canada Day celebration at Mel Lastman Square and many other Canada Day events,” the city said in a statement Wednesday.

Other celebrations across the city on July 1 include the Ashbridge Bay Fireworks and leading events in the week leading up to Canada Day.

City staff noted that they will work to leverage funding within existing budgets and leverage community partnerships, and will “continue to speak with partners with the Government of Canada about additional federal funding for the Canada Day celebration.”

More information about the festivities will be announced in the coming weeks, the city administration said.
