Although many animal lovers say it's every day for them, Thursday is National Pet Day. Whether your pet is feathered, winged, or furry, there are many ways to honor the special critters in your life.

Social media app Nextdoor is taking this moment to spread the goodness. In support of the Toronto Humane Society, Nextdoor is encouraging people to show love to animals who don't have a place to call home this National Pet Day.

Christopher Doyle, managing director of Nextdoor Canada, said pets are a popular topic on the social networking platform and shelter support is a perfect fit for their app, which is “about helping each other.”

Many pet lovers are active on the site, Doyle explained, helping to find lost pets, recommending neighborhood pet sitters and dog walkers, and buying and selling pet items.

The platform has also seen a surge in pet adoptions, reuniting nearly 4,000 pets with their families. Many lost pets don't travel far from home, so contacting people nearby can be critical to returning an escaped animal safe and sound.

Although many pets have happy endings after being returned to their families, they are waiting for their forever homes in shelters and rescues. With many shelters overflowing with pets, Doyle said giving back to these organizations fits into a three-pronged plan for Nextdoor:

1. “Spring cleaning is underway, so we encourage our neighbors to donate gently used pet items such as pet beds, harnesses or toys, or even pet food. The humane society even accepts open bags of pet food.”

2. “We did a survey on Nextdoor and 29% of people said they feel lonely or isolated, so we want to help them out. Joining a local shelter and volunteering can be a great way to get out into the community and meet other people.”

3. “The humane society is also looking for people to do fundraisers or drives for them. You can have an event on the platform, a walk or run, or a birthday party for pets or neighborhood pets.
