NCAA hockey championships include Calgary-born goaltender Matt Davis

Calgary-born goaltender Matt Davis will face the Frozen Four in St. Paul on Thursday night.

Davis is the starting goaltender for the University of Denver Pioneers, whose winner will advance to the NCAA hockey final against Boston University.

This is Davis' third year on varsity, but his first as a starter.

Davis had a strong season, peaking in March when he went 9-1-0 with a 1.89 goals-against, .931 save percentage and a shutout.

He was also named the National Goaltender of the Month for March by the Hockey Commissioners Association.

“He's been great for us,” Pioneers coach David Karl said in an April 3 article by Denver's Tyler King. Newspaper. “(He's) really stabilized his game in the last couple of months. I think the team got in front of him, but he was better behind them and that with our team defense. It is clear that we will not win the first or second game (regional) without him. I am proud of it.

“(He's) been through a lot this year with injuries and trying to come back from that. Playing in a team that can score goals, but might struggle a bit defensively, he's had to manage that.”

Davis, one of 23 Canadian players in the Frozen Four, should be available for the game against the Boston University Terriers, who feature two blue chips from Vancouver, defensemen Tom Willander and Maclin Celebrini. First overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.

In another “Frozen Four” clash, the University of Michigan faces Boston College.

The title game is Saturday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
