Improving health outcomes through nursing research

Faculty of Nursing

Nursing research is the foundation of health care innovation, system optimization, elimination of disparities, and improvement of outcomes. Because external grants favor experienced researchers, the Faculty of Nursing Research Fund promotes promising work outside the field: smaller studies and research initiated by new faculty.

The endowment has funded a wide range of projects at UCalgary, including research on the psychosocial impact of childhood cancer on families, examining emergency room wait times and how triage nurses manage patient admissions.

“It's also capacity building with new faculty,” says UCalgary Associate Dean (Research) of Nursing, Dr. Nancy Moles, BN'95, MN'97, PhD'00. “These are incentive funds for people who are not yet competitive at the tri-council level to get them to get larger, external grants and continue to contribute to the field in meaningful ways.”

This includes the study of nursing teaching and learning. “When you're in the hospital, you usually interact with the nurses more than anything else,” Moules says. “Our mission (as a faculty) is to ensure that you are in good hands by providing the best possible education to our nursing students.”

Weaving the vibrant tapestry of our communities

School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape

Design Matters is a thought-provoking lecture series from Calgary's downtown School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape that aims to inspire transformative change and spark conversation about social issues. The series brings to Calgary a range of designers, innovators and thought leaders exploring design and urban planning.

“It weaves together the threads of innovation, architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture, inspiring us to look beyond the ordinary and imagine the extraordinary,” says Diba Mohebzede, MLA'20, graduate research fellow and faculty social media specialist. , who makes the lecture series look like a beautiful tapestry. “It brings together people from all over the world with different perspectives on the rich urban fabric of our cities.”

Donations to the Design Matters Lecture Series fund enable the faculty to host lectures free of charge to the public that not only bring renowned speakers from around the world, but also benefit the entire community.

Innovations beyond the classroom

Schulich School of Engineering

Capstone projects are year-long assignments in which fourth-year students come up with innovative solutions to real-world problems. — and showcase them at the Schulich School of Engineering's annual Capstone Design Fair.

There are two ways to choose a project: choose from a list of challenges offered by industry partners, known as traditional caps, or create your own. While both rely on engineering know-how to solve a problem, entrepreneurship fundamentals test students' business sense as they try to bring that solution to market.

Either way, experience is invaluable, says Dr. Colin Dalton, PhD, associate professor of electrical and software engineering.

“Through traditional capstones, students make important industry connections,” says Dalton, who runs the faculty's entrepreneurship course. “By choosing an entrepreneurial path, they learn about the process of building a company and the real problems startups face.”

Prize-winning projects at the Schulich School of Engineering's 2024 Capstone Design Fair on April 4 include a fetal monitoring device, a sounding ball for blind dogs and a new way to purify water.
