Bicycle Winnipeg has called for Russ Wyatt to be removed from the committee

A local organization is calling for a Winnipeg councilor to be removed from the public works committee after comments made at Tuesday's meeting.

In a press release Wednesday, Bike Winnipeg said its executive director, Mark Coho, made a presentation about the intersection of Osborne Street and River Avenue.

During the meeting, Bike Winnipeg Transcona said Coun. Russ Wyatt commented on the report, describing Cohoe and other delegations as 'bicycle Nazis'.

“The use of the term 'Nazi' is not only offensive, it is also harmful to the generations who suffered from Nazi Germany's murder of six million Jews in the 1930s and 1940s,” Bick said in a Winnipeg statement.

“For an elected official to use such language in a public meeting without immediate reprimand should concern every Winnipeg citizen.”

Bike Winnipeg is now calling for Wyatt to be removed from the public affairs committee for violating the councilors' code of conduct.

Asked about the incident Wednesday, Mayor Scott Gillingham said Wyatt's comments were unacceptable.

“I would encourage the councilor to withdraw their opinions and refer to Bic Winnipeg,” Gillingham said.

CTV News Winnipeg spoke with White on Wednesday afternoon and will provide more information.
