8 Things to Know Before Moving to Calgary

Calgary is a hot spot for movers right now, and if you're one of the many people moving here, you might not know what to expect.

If that sounds like you, we've put together a list of things to know when you're here. With this knowledge, you can pass as a local Calgarian!

Rapid weather changes

Calgary has a reputation for its cold weather, but it's not just the cold that you should prepare for, the temperature can change dramatically in a matter of hours. You might leave the house in the morning in shorts and a t-shirt and come back in a winter coat!

Summer lasts three months (if you're lucky).

Our weather is not necessarily cold, but it is very cold and unfortunately it can last for a while, so don't pack away your winter clothes too soon! We can count on June and July to be warm and sunny (sometimes too warm), but by the end of August it's already cold.

Maybe you want to buy a car

If you really want to hear the Calgary Range, ask them about Calgary Transit. As the city expands, it can become difficult to get around without a car, so you may want to work a car into your budget.

Locals love to hate the Stampede

It's hard not to love the free Stampede breakfasts, but often the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth brings tons of drunks downtown and things get a lot more crowded. It's the best and worst thing in Calgary!

The best patio seats

You know it's summer in Calgary when the patios start to open, and Calgarians love their patios. You'll find the best of them walking around the city's landmarks, such as 17th Avenue and Kensington.

Rent is very expensive

While rent here is relatively cheaper than other Canadian cities, prices have skyrocketed and locals are struggling to keep up. Right now, you'd be hard-pressed to find a one-bedroom apartment for less than $1,600 a month.

We get great views of the northern lights

We're not very far north in the province, but that doesn't mean we don't get to see an amazing Northern Lights show! You're used to waking up and seeing photos all over social media. If you don't want to miss them, you can always follow them here.

Get ready to support the flames

We know they haven't been good since their playoff loss in 2004, but we still love them. If you really want to fit in, you'll want to make sure you have a good jersey and aren't afraid to sport Flames red on game days.
