A long-awaited improvement to make life easier for transit users saw the light of day Wednesday, as commuters in the Greater Montreal area learned they can now top up their OPUS cards with their smartphones.

The Chrono app is free to download on Apple and Android phones, allowing passengers to purchase fares by tapping the back of their phone with their OPUS card.

According to the team formed by Concerto, the Autorité régionale de transport metropolitain and its various transit authorities, the app allows OPUS holders to avoid long queues at regular points of sale and buy fares whenever they want.

The Chrono app lets users know how many tickets they have left on their OPUS cards, but the feature to allow them to buy tickets was launched on Wednesday.

The rollout of the latest version of the app comes after a trial period in which 15,000 residents of the capital tried out the new functionality.

The Concerto team hopes to upgrade the ticketing system and offer bank card payments directly at the validation terminal in the coming years.
