Manitoba's 2024 budget will expand the Winnipeg Health Centre

WINNIPEG – The Government of Manitoba announced the expansion of the Winnipeg Health Sciences Center (HSC) through the 2024 budget.

Thirty-five medicine, 10 psychiatric and five surgical beds will be added at the HSC over the next two years to expand inpatient capacity, reduce pressure on emergency departments and increase surgical capacity, the Manitoba government said in a statement.

The 2024 budget has allocated more than $65 million to reduce emergency room wait times across the province, the release said, including funding for 151 new acute care beds.

Grace Hospital is in the process of opening 31 new medical and surgical beds, including 10, as part of its new family medicine program. Since they were announced in November, five people have been employed, with 36 more acute care beds set to open in phases later this spring at St. Boniface Hospital to provide care to Manitobans.
